COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TYPEWRITER, MANUAL, NON-PORTABLE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description.
This description covers manual (non-portable) typewriters for general office use, as distinguished from those models referred to as “portable” by industry. The typewriters shall be currently marketed commercial models designed for office use and shall be drawn from current production lots.
Salient characteristics:
Vertical line space selection with a minimum of two positions for 1 and 2 line spaces.
Variable vertical line spacer.
Carriage release.
Platen release (paper removal).
Margin stops, right and left.
Paper bail with two or more bail rolls.
Line ruling device.
Alignment guide.
Line finder permits ratchet free movement of platen and return to original line of type.
Carriage return level.
Adjustable paper guide.
Right margin warning device.
Minimum of three ribbon positions (red, black and stencil).
Tabulator key (bar)
Tabulator set.
Tabulator clear, single and total.
Shift key, right and left.
Shift lock.
Shift lock release, right and left.
Margin release.
Backspace.
Space bar.
Touch adjustment.
Automatic ribbon reverse.
Dust cover.
Color choice (as available in manufacturers commercial line).
Mechanical requirements. Unless otherwise specified, the typewriter shall be equipped with the manufacturer’s standard elite type style, complete with upper and lower case characters.
The keyboard shall have a minimum of 40 keys and 88 characters and the arrangement of the 44 basic printing keys shall be in accordance with American National Standard for Typewriter Keyboard Arrangement ANSI X4.7-1973 of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI). Typewriters shall be available with carriages accommodating paper widths and associated printed line widths up to dimensions as specified from the table below:

* Carriages furnished shall not accept platens for paper widths greater than the width specified from the above selection.
