The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description
This description covers heavy duty, office (non-portable) electric, typebar typewriters drawn from currently produced lots. Heavy duty refers to service classification capability of 10 years at 4 hours per day of business week typing application prior to overhaul, i.e, 30 million impressions prior to overhaul.
Salient characteristics:
Vertical line space selection with a minimum of three positions (position 1,6 line spaces per inch; position 2,3 line spaces per inch; and position 3, manufacturer’s option).
Variable vertical line spacer.
Carriage release (right and left).
platen release paper removal.
Paper bail with minimum of two bail rolls.
Adjustable paper guide.
Line finder device which permits ratchet-free movement of platen and return to original line of type.
Margin warning device.
Minimum of two ribbon positions (ribbon and stencil), except for machines equipped to use cartridges.
Tabulator set.
Tabulator clear (single and total).
Shift key (right and left).
Shift lock.
Shift lock release (right and left).
Margin release.
Carrier/carriage return with automatic line feed.
Backspace.
Spacebar (forward spacing).
Automatic ribbon reverse, except on machines equipped to use cartridges.
Margin set (right and left).
Repeat keys (forward spacer, back space, underscore, and hyphen).
Dust cover.
Pitch, designated in characters per inch (as specified).
Type style (as specified).
Maximum paper width and related maximum horizontal writing line capability (as specified).
Ribbon system (as specified).
Color choice (as specified from colors available in contracted manufacturer’s commercial selection).
Conforms to UL Standard No. 114.
The issue of UL Standard No. 114 in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with this requirement.
Workmanship. Typewriters shall be clean, free from faulty construction or any defects which affect appearance, serviceability, or constitute a hazard to the user.
Electro-mechanical requirements.
Typewriters shall be equipped with resilient feet or base to minimum movement and prevent marring of furniture. Minimum carriage clearance, without riser, shall be 3-1/4 inches from the desktop.
All keys and operating controls shall be easily accessible and in no case shall any controls be located on the back of the typewriter.
Unless otherwise specified, typewriter keyboards shall be in accordance with the attached keyboard arrangement.
Typewriters shall operate on a 60 Hz, 115 V a.c. power source, unless otherwise specified. When specified, the typewriters shall conform to electro-magnetic interference requirements of MIL-STD-461,-462, and -463 (on/off switch excepted from the requirements of these three standards).
